Wonder #3. Buying my first Powerball ticket. ☄️ Have you ever won a lottery prize?
We were out on a double-date with our dear friends, Gordon and Barbra, when our server suddenly exclaimed, “The Powerball just hit a billion dollars today!”
We all burst out laughing and immediately launched into the “what if” game— Take a World Cruise? Own a Picasso? Drive a Lamborghini? Then came the realization: NONE of us had ever bought a Powerball ticket.
“I wonder how it works?” I said. “Where do you buy them? How much do they cost?”
Barb, knowing about my new quest to find wonders, grinned and said, “Let’s stop wondering and do it!”
Just then, I glanced out the window and spotted a 7-Eleven across the street with a huge glowing banner: Buy your Billion-Dollar Powerball here.
Was it… literally a sign? 🚦
Naturally, we took it as one.
I grabbed a receipt, flipped it over, and drafted a “contract” guaranteeing that any winnings would be split four ways. Gordon (a retired attorney) gave it a thumbs up, so we all signed it right there at the table, laughing like kids plotting a caper.
Over at the 7-Eleven, the clerk was wonderfully patient with us wide-eyed newbies. We decided to choose our own numbers, and the whole process felt oddly thrilling—like unlocking a secret portal . We teased each other about lucky numbers, giggled our way up to the counter to pay our money, and proudly held up the little slips of paper that carried our billion-dollar dreams.
That night, when the winning numbers were announced, our dreams evaporated 💸 . We won exactly… ZERO. Not even a pity dollar. But we agreed we got at least ten dollars’ worth of fun and laughter out of the adventure.
Will I ever buy another Powerball ticket? Probably not. But at least I’ll never wonder how it works again.
